Historically, last week was one of the worst that Half Hollow Hills High School West has seen on the boys soccer field in quite some time. For the first time in 11 years, Head Coach Doug Gannon said, the Colts (6-3-1) dropped back-to-back league matches – with 3-1 defeats coming at the hands of both Smithtown West (9-1) and North Babylon (8-1-1).

On Friday, though, in a hard-fought game, the Colts bounced back with a 1-0 victory over Riverhead (3-7).

Wildcats Hold On With Late Goal To Win

The clock read 7:00 and, following a goal from Walt Whitman High School’s Christina McFelia, the “1” on the scoreboard that had been attached to the Wildcats’ name since the first half evolved into a “2.” At the time, with Whitman (3-5) then leading Bay Shore (3-6) by a score of 2-0, it seemed like McFelia’s goal would just be the cherry on top of a win; it ended up being the game winner.

Through 10 games this season as of Tuesday, the Northport (10-0) girls soccer team is outscoring opponents 35-0.

Spirited Homecoming Despite Blue Devils’ Loss

Gorgeous weather formed the perfect backdrop for Huntington High School’s Homecoming Day on Saturday. A midday parade through Huntington village included hundreds of participants and the afternoon football game drew a crowd of more than 2,000.

“We had the perfect weather for a perfect day, which began with a tremendous turnout for a spirited parade,” Superintendent James Polansky said. “Thank you to the students, staff, parents and PTA leadership from all buildings for their participation.” 

The huge crowd packed the bleachers and spilled out on either side of the structure to watch as the Blue Devils gave undefeated Miller Place all it could handle early in the game before falling behind and finally succumbing to the Panthers’ offensive onslaught.

Tigers Ride Momentum In Homecoming Shutout

Momentum is tricky. Sports fans love to believe that making a big stop on defense or breaking off a big run on offense can carry their team to victory – but in actuality, momentum can’t physically be measured; it can’t be felt.

But on Saturday the Northport Varsity football team clearly had it.

Following the district’s induction of its inaugural athletic hall of fame class, the boys took to the field to take on Walt Whitman (1-1) in the school’s annual homecoming game. The Tigers (2-0) dominated 24-0.

Thunderbirds Defense Stout In Homecoming Victory

Led by linebacker Blaise Spinelli’s stud performance, the Thunderbirds (2-0) ran over Copiague (0-2) on Saturday in Half Hollow Hills High School East’s annual homecoming game.

Spinelli, a senior, forced two fumbles, nabbed an interception and had a game-high 12 tackles to lead the Thunderbirds to a 31-8 victory.

Tornadoes Blow Past Mustangs At Homecoming

A little bit of rain on Saturday hardly dampened the homecoming enthusiasm for the Tornadoes football squad, which notched its first victory during a 22-0 shutout of the Mt. Sinai Mustangs during homecoming.

The victory followed the annual homecoming parade, in which Harborfields High School celebrated the occasion as floats, following a sporting event theme, rolled down Broadway in Greenlawn with hundreds cheering them on.
