Oh, September. With you, come long school days – but, in turn, so come high school sports. From boys soccer to girls volleyball and everything in-between, Northport High School’s varsity athletes have been on fields, in the gyms and on the courts this season. So let’s see how they’ve looked.

First off, the Northport girls soccer team is outstanding. Led by senior forward Sabrina Barton with 7 goals this season as of press time Tuesday, the Tigers have put the ball in the back of the net 24 times. Even more incredible, Northport has yet to give up a goal through eight games this season. The Tigers (8-0) are back in action today at Central Islip (0-7) kicking off 4:30 p.m.

Continuing with unbeaten teams, the Northport boys volleyball squad has started the season 5-0 – including 3 shutout victories. Senior Mike McLaughlin has been key for the Tigers so far and will look to continue that today when the team travels to Center Moriches (1-6) for a 6:30 p.m. start.

Also unbeaten is the girls cross country team, which emerged as victors from its three-team meet with North Babylon (0-1) and West Islip (0-1) in September. The girls were in action again on Tuesday against Riverhead (1-0), but they’ll next meet Bay Shore (1-0) at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park for a 4:30 p.m. start.

One loss isn’t bad, right? The football team shouldn’t think so. Through three games this year, the boys have emerged at 2-1 including a big shutout win against Walt Whitman (2-1) on homecoming. At quarterback, junior Andrew Smith will lead the team to Ward Melville (0-3) today for a 4 p.m. kickoff.

The girls swimming team – also made up of swimmers from neighboring Commack High School – is also in the one-hitter club, dropping only one of its meets so far this year. Today the girls will try to keep their winning ways up when they travel to St. Joseph’s College and take on William Floyd (0-2) at 4 p.m.

Taking down a first place team is an accomplishment the Tigers boys soccer team can put on its résumé: Northport defeated Central Islip (5-1) by a score of 5-3 on Sept. 18. Brandon Egan, senior forward for Northport (3-2-3), has been a force so far for the team, leading the Tigers in total points with 5. On Wednesday he would look to keep that up in a trip to Smithtown East (5-2-1); and then on Oct. 6 as Northport heads to Walt Whitman (5-2) where it’ll faceoff against the Wildcats for the second time this season at 4:45 p.m.

With the field hockey sticks, Northport has been a force, too. The Tigers (5-2) won four of its five via shutout and have relied on junior Noelle Peragine (8 goals) to do the scoring so far this year. On Wednesday, the team took on Commack (4-3) at home, and will next travel to Connetquot (3-5) on Oct. 6 for a 4:30 p.m. start.

The Lady Tigers have been playing solid tennis. They started the season at 3-3. However, the girls did start the season with three straight wins before dropping their next three matches, so they looked to get back to their winning ways on Tuesday and Wednesday against Walt Whitman (2-5) and Kings Park (1-7). Next they’ll welcome John Glenn (5-3) at 4 p.m. on Oct. 6.

So far this season, the boys cross country team has yet to get in the win column, starting the season 0-2. On Tuesday they looked to bounce back though against Connetquot (1-1) and then again on Oct. 7 when the boys travel to Belmont Lake State Park in West Babylon at 4:30 p.m. to face Lindenhurst (1-1).

Also struggling through September was the girls volleyball team, which has started the year 0-6. The girls would look to get on track as they traveled to Lindenhurst (1-6) on Tuesday and then again on Oct. 7 when they welcome Half Hollow Hills East (2-5) for a 5:45 p.m. start.
