Voter Turnout Swells in 2017 Election

Each of the three races in this year’s election cycle saw increased voter turnout in the Town of Huntington when compared to their previous appearance on the ballot.

In 2013, when Supervisor Frank Petrone was challenged by Councilman Eugene Cook, a total of 38,275 votes were cast. In the 2017 supervisor race, a total of 49,170 votes were cast, marking a 28.47-percent increase.

As for town council, the four-way 2015 race for two seats generated 55,094 total votes. This year’s election, also a four-way race for two seats, generated 93,922 total votes, a 70.48-percent increase.

Finally the highway superintendent race in 2015 between then incumbent Bill Naughton and current Highway Superintendent Peter Gunther drew 37,575 votes. This year’s race generated 47,702 votes, a 26.95-percent increase.
