After serious consideration, Rich Reinwald and his wife Carole have decided to retire and sell their beloved Reinwald’s Bakery.

Reinwald and his brother own the 495 New York Ave. bakery in Huntington.

He said Ben Borgognone, owner of Buttercooky Bakery, approached him after the fellow baker “heard that I was talking to some sales people about the building.”

The fact that Borgognone, operator of two Buttercooky Bakery locations, one in Floral Park and the other in Manhasset, is a baker was instrumental in the decision to sell, Reinwald said.

“It was not a matter of getting the highest price,” Reinwald said. “In fact, we turned down higher offers.”

He decided to accept the offer because Borgognone agreed to continue operating a bakery in the building.

“We are happy with end results because he agreed to keep on the employees,” Reinwald said.

Sixty-five-year-old Reinwald said everyday operation of the bakery was becoming more strenuous.

“The business has taken some toll on me health wise,” Reinwald said.

The timetable for turning over ownership of the bakery is “soon”, he added. “It’s going to be weeks, maybe even next week.”

After four decades as a baker, Reinwald said, he is happy to retire in Huntington, where he has lived for 30 years.

However, he did say selling the business feels “bittersweet” because many of his customers feel like family.
