A Dix Hills man fatally shot his girlfriend last Thursday, just footsteps away from their home, Suffolk police said.

Eric Bermudez confronted his girlfriend, Regina Flecha, on Burroughs Avenue, north of Kenmore Street, at around 7:30 p.m. and shot her multiple times, according to police. Both Bermudez and Flecha resided on Black Pine Court, which is a short walk away.

Police said that after Bermudez shot Flecha he pulled her into his vehicle and drove away from the scene.

Two Suffolk Police Third Squad detectives later saw Bermudez’ vehicle speeding on Fifth Avenue in Bay Shore and pulled over the vehicle.

Bay Shore-Brightwaters Rescue Ambulance responded to the traffic stop and brought Flecha, 37, to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where she died a short time later.

Homicide Squad detectives charged Bermudez, 36, with second degree murder.

Bermudez, who is being represented by Hauppauge-based attorney Latoya James, appeared in Suffolk First District Court in Central Islip on Friday, according to court records. Bermudez was scheduled to appear again on Wednesday.

James did not immediately return a call for comment.

Suffolk police said the investigation is continuing and are asking anyone with information to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
