Quarterback Anthony Lucarelli threw for 228 yards and four touchdowns as the Colts of Half Hollow Hills High School West dominated their homecoming day with a 42-7 win over Riverhead (2-4).

Sitting in the top-third of Suffolk’s Division III standings, it’s easy to be impressed by what Harborfields’ field hockey team has accomplished on the field this season – and is poised to continue when playoffs begin Saturday.

But the Lady Tornadoes aren’t just making strides on the field -- they’ve made them off of it, as well.

As the Colts of 2015 dominated Riverhead during High School West’s homecoming game Saturday afternoon, a Colt of yesteryear was visiting his old stomping grounds.

Stephen Bowen, a 2002 Hills West graduate and current defensive end for the New York Jets, joined the Colts on the sidelines for their homecoming game.

After a pep rally saw thousands of St. Anthony’s students flood the school’s gym with homecoming spirit Friday afternoon, the Friars undefeated football team responded with a decisive 45-17 victory over Chaminade that night.

Junior quarterback Kenny Chavez rushed for three touchdowns, including a 35-yarder in the second quarter, to lead High School East on its homecoming day 27-7 over Smithtown East. The win was the Thunderbirds’ first this season.

Though they eventually fell to Sachem North 25-22, the Wildcats of Walt Whitman High School’s football team didn’t give up without a fight on homecoming day.

Huntington High School seniors Taylor Moreno and Katie Reilly are no slouches on the lacrosse field. The Blue Devil teammates have made the Top 30 list of female lacrosse recruits in the country for 2015, and are raring to take their athleticism to the collegiate level.

The beautiful weekend weather served as an appropriate backdrop for Huntington High School’s daylong homecoming festivities Saturday afternoon, despite a 28-20 Blue Devils’ loss to Half Hollow Hills West.

Amid Saturday’s homecoming festivities – including an annual parade down Scholar Lane, a Cougarette Senior Ceremony and the naming of Matt Shalhoub and Juliette DePalo as king and queen – Commack’s football team added an exclamation point to the day with a dominating 40-0 shutout of visiting Central Islip in front of more than 1,500 fans.

For the Northport High School football team, it was a fight till the end at their homecoming game on Saturday, and they wound up victorious, defeating Sachem North 29-22. 

It was an eventful occasion at the Harborfields High School homecoming football game, on Saturday, with performances, floats and a 27-0 shutout over the Amityville Warriors to cap it all off.

Just days before graduation this Sunday, Half Hollow Hills High School West senior and leftfielder Joshua Wende is reflecting on an accomplishment that earned him acclaim: a perfect 2400 on his Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), followed by a perfect 5 on his American College Testing (ACT).

In its maiden voyage, the Northport Nautical Mile race appears to have gone off without a hitch. 

Three-hundred seventeen runners, ranging in age from 3 to 77 years old, completed the 1.15-mile downhill route through the heart of Northport.

Recounting the story of how he was told that he would be the honoree of Saturday’s Hills lacrosse alumni game, Half Hollow Hills East boys lacrosse goalie coach George Fox recalled being approached by organizer Eric Geringswald, who told him that it was “his turn.”

When the judges’ decision was announced Friday night at the Barclays Center, Greenlawn’s Chris Algieri was unanimously defeated by Amir Khan. Through 12 rounds, the judges ruled, Khan was the better boxer.

Yet, in the eyes of many, Algieri was the better performer. Thanks to an aggressive new style, the 31-year-old former world champion was a victor even in defeat.

An underdog; a long shot; an unknown – time and time again, Greenlawn’s Chris Algieri has been overlooked. While not ideal, these mantras haven’t slowed the 31-year-old professional boxer – if anything, he’s embraced them.

“That’s what I’ve been my whole career: an underdog,” Algieri said. “I’m a kid from Long Island; I’m not supposed to be boxing.”

After a streaky season filled with ups and downs, the Wildcats of Walt Whitman’s boys lacrosse team needed just one win in their last four league games to clinch a spot in the 2015 Suffolk Division I playoffs.

That win came in the form of a 14-6 triumph on May 6 where Matt Stockfeder led Whitman with 5 points – on 3 goals and 2 assists – and goalkeeper Shane Brennan preserved the Wildcats’ lead with 15 saves.
