For Elwood’s Blue Wave youth wrestling program, the word “team” describes more than just the boys who suit up and take to the wrestling mats sporting the Blue Wave name at tournaments all over the Northeast. During practices, parents double as coaches, older siblings do the same, and alumni or friends of the program often make appearances to help out the up-and-comers.

When Head Coach Thomas Giaramita built Blue Wave wrestling in 1999, he started more than just a team, he started a family; a family set on the goal of building an Elwood wrestling dynasty.

The Northport High School bowling team came to a halt in 2011 when beloved math teacher Elliot Klein was diagnosed with brain cancer and left the bowling program - and when Klein passed away in June 2013, it seemed as if the Lady Tigers bowling program (which had seen middling interest over the years) might die alongside him.

Thankfully, the Lady Tigers have rebuilt the program over the years, and are beginning to come back strong!

Emerging from the preseason with a tournament win under their belt, the Whitman Wildcats and Head Coach Thomas Fitzpatrick were rightfully excited as they looked forward to the official start of the 2014-2015 season.

A little more than two weeks after Greenlawn’s championship-winning boxer, Chris Algieri, fell to World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title holder Manny Pacquiao in China, the 30-year-old has returned to Huntington.

While the St. Anthony’s High School graduate has been enjoying his relaxation time, there is a major controversy that’s undoubtedly been causing the champ some stress. Algieri and his team at Star Boxing, his promoter, are in the midst of a battle with the WBO, which is trying to strip him of the junior welterweight title he won in June.

Motivated by a special cause this year, Harborfields’ girls soccer teams raised over $10,000 for the “Kicks for Cancer” program, collecting donations to benefit a family of Harborfields High School students who recently lost their mother to cancer.

Adopted by the Suffolk County Girls Soccer Coaches Association, “Kicks for Cancer” raises funds for families with loved ones directly impacted by the disease.

Statistically, Half Hollow High School West was averaging 30.6 points per game this season and has had past success in the Suffolk County championship game, winning the title in 2009. On Saturday, though, when Hills West (9-2) took on East Islip (8-3) in the county Division II championship game at Stony Brook University, the Colts were without one of the game’s most crucial aspects: execution.
