Walt Whitman High School has recognized its Athletes of the Month for October as the school’s varsity girls soccer team, and star golfer, Scott McEntee.

“We have a young golf team this year and everyone progressed a lot,” said McEntee, a junior.

McEntee represented Whitman and Suffolk League III in the county finals, which were recently played. He is awaiting his final results to see if he made the cut for next spring’s Long Island Championship.

His coach, John Labate, called McEntee, “an amazing athlete.”

Labate continued, “His passion, dedication and desire to improve his golf game is inspiring. Scott sets an excellent example for the younger players on the team, building character through golf etiquette.”

McEntee is also a member of Whitman’s Debate Club; he’s a section editor for the school’s Paw Print School Newspaper; and plays violin in the Chamber Orchestra.

As for Whitman’s girls soccer team, the Wildcats recently finished up its season following a run in the Suffolk Class AA playoffs. The Wildcats ultimately fell to Northport, which went on to win the county championship.

Head coach Mike Moccia said his team “battled like warriors.”

“We were the only team in the conference to hold the county champs scoreless,” said Moccia, speaking of the regular season game in which the Wildcats took Northport to a penalty shootout after two scoreless overtime periods.

“We have 12 seniors on the team, so these kids have been around a while, and this is the first time in six years we made the playoffs, so they were hungry. We had two close games already with Northport, and the girls were determined to beat them on their own field,” Moccia said.

The members of this year’s girls soccer team are: Nicole Algierie, Angelique Auriemma, Alivia Barton, Jessica Boyle, Yomary Cordero, Alexa DelColle, Rebecca Dewitt, Hanna Fink, Kristen Finnerty, Camilee Getchell, Danielle Kleet, Jamie Kralstein, Gianna laMay, Marissa Martino, Taylor Martino, Shannon McHale, Meagan O’Donnell, Angeli Rinaldi, Brittany Shaneberger, Meghan Soulias, Hannah Stasko, Victoria Thurer, Joie Tortorice, Shelbi Wuss, and team manager Jared Rosenthal.
