The Cold Spring Harbor wrestling team recently went 4-1 at its annual tournament, which this year was hosted on Dec. 23.

At Cold Spring Harbor High School, the Seahawks defeated Bellmore JFK, West Islip, John Glenn and Shoreham-Wading River. They fell to Miller Place.

Coach Mike Ferrugiari said freshman Gaven Bell, who weighs in at 126-pounds, was a top performer. He went 5-0 in his matches, and was named overall MVP.

Meanwhile, junior captain Raymond Costa, who weighs in at 132 pounds, was also a perfect 5-0, and won Cold Spring Harbor’s team MVP.

Ferrugiari said the match against Glenn was close, but Cold Spring Harbor eighth grader Garrett Geraci was tough in his match, and the performance helped the Seahawks secure the victory.

“He did a nice job of not getting pinned. It made a difference in the match, and in us being able to have our elder wrestlers go out and get pins and win the match for us,” Ferrugiari said. “Bell and Costa secured the victory with back-to-back pins to end the match.”

Competing in Nassau 4B Conference, the Seahawks currently sport a 3-0 record. Overall, they’re 9-1 this season.

The hot start is something the Seahawks have been yearning, Ferrugiari said.

“Over the course of 15 years, we’ve been trying to build the program back up,” Ferrugiari said. “This is what I’ve been talking about for the last few years. We have a young core that’s going to get to this level, and it’s starting to show in our performances.”

The Seahawks are currently preparing for its upcoming matches against Island Trees, Oyster Bay, a tournament at Syosset and Locust Valley. Ferrugiari said the Locust Valley match, which will be held on Jan. 16, could possibly determine the league champion.

“We haven’t beat them in seven years,” he added. “That should be a really good match because we’re both undefeated in the league.”

He added that the match will also determine which team will be heading to the inaugural Small School State tournament in Syracuse.

“If we win the conference, we would represent the small schools of Nassau, which has never been done before,” Ferrugiari said. “It’s a goal that the boys really want to attain and have a shot to win the state because we feel that we belong up there.”

The Seahawks were slated to face Island Trees after deadline on Wednesday. They also scheduled to travel to Oyster Bay tomorrow for a slated 4:30 p.m. match.
