The Lady Blue Devils of Huntington secured a second-straight victory on Tuesday night when they defeated the Lady Bulls of Smithtown East, 44-36.

The Blue Devils win came on the back of a strong defensive performance and tough play down low on the glass.

A low-scoring first quarter saw the Blue Devils pull out to an early lead that they would hold onto for the rest of the game. Huntington held the Bulls to just five points while scoring 11.

Senior captain Nicole Leslie provided a focal point for the Blue Devils success. She grabbed 12 rebounds in the game, providing the Blue Devil shooters with second chance opportunities and limiting Smithtown’s ability to follow-up. Leslie also scored three points in the contest.

The Bulls offense recovered in the second quarter putting up 16 points. The Blue Devils went into the locker room at halftime with a slender one-point lead, 22-21.

The Blue Devils defense buckled down again in the second half, limiting Smithtown East to just eight and seven points in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.

Abby Maichin led Huntington’s offense with 11 points, and also contributed on the defensive end of the court with three blocks and 10 rebounds.

Senior captain Alex Heuwetter was a strong force all game driving the ball to the basket; she contributed 10 points to the victory, six of which came from the free-throw line.

The Blue Devils extended their slim lead in the third quarter to 32-29, setting up the potential for a very tense final period.

Huntington’s defense held firm in the fourth, and the shooters did enough to secure the victory.

Paige Lennon contributed nine points and a three-pointer, captain Katie Seccafico put up eight and Jordan Forte sank a three to round out the score sheet for the Blue Devils.

The victory brings Huntington’s record to 10-7 on the year, with a conference record of 6-5 in Suffolk League III.

The Blue Devils are scheduled to play tonight, 4 p.m. away against the Lady Bulldogs of North Babylon.
