Friends of two 10-year-old boys who drowned decades ago in a sump adjacent to a Huntington Station park found closure last weekend through a bench dedication ceremony marking 50 years since the drownings.

A majority of support outweighed a handful of opposition at a public hearing Tuesday night on a 77,000-square-foot assisted living center proposed for Huntington Station.

Ryan Gurecki, the Lindenhurst man who drove drunk and caused a crash that killed Huntington Station nurse Karen Holden, was sentenced to six to 18 years in prison by Justice Fernando Camacho at the Suffolk County Supreme Court in Central Islip on Friday; Lynne Pallmeyer, sister of Karen Holden, the Huntington Station nurse killed in a crash caused by a drunk driver, announced the creation of a scholarship in her sister’s memory.
