Sometimes, beautiful things emerge from wreckage. One of those things is Huntington village’s Red restaurant.

Nino Antuzzi’s New American, organic-fixated restaurant, which opened in November 2000, abruptly closed almost a year ago after a devastating fire next door at 425 New York Ave. caused smoke and water damaged to the restaurant.

But Antuzzi took it in stride; it was an opportunity to push renovation plans along.

As Valentine’s Day draws nearer, Cupid’s arrow often turns from the heart to the stomach. How better to wine and dine your special somebody than with a night out on the town at one of Huntington’s fabulous restaurants?

That’s where we come in.

To whomever is making the date in your party, don’t delay – when you see the one for you, don’t dilly-dally; just pick up the phone and book your table ASAP. Love’s greatest holiday is also a dining bonanza, and the closer you get to Feb. 14, the harder a table is to get.

Over 1,000 miles from Huntington exists a land where alligators are food, grits are a common side dish and shrimp come with heads still attached. The inspiration for Huntington’s Storyville American Table, this distant land is New Orleans, Louisiana.

Co-owners TC (Tom Curry) and Brian Finn opened Storyville American Table in May 2013, taking over the kitchen and dining room from Finley's, opening the New Orleans-themed restaurant that the pair had been wanting to open for two decades.

While one might argue not to mess with the classics, Jonathan’s Ristorante Executive Chef Tito Onofre is introducing new visions of some of the restaurant’s most popular dishes, balanced with timeless favorites.

Not to fear, though – the rule of Jonathan’s hasn't changed. That one is simple: “Order what you’re in the mood for, and let the magic happen” at the hands of Onofre, who has held court at Jonathan’s, owned by Roberto Oronato, for the last 17 years.

There’s a twinkle in his eye as he talks about his native country and its culinary traditions, and satisfaction on his face as he surveys his busy Wall Street restaurant. Argentina, Hugo Garcia says, is a center of culture, traditions, values and flavors – all of which are embodied in Café Buenos Aires.

“I love what I do. This is my passion,” he says, arms outstretched to present to us a table filled with dishes from Café Buenos Aires’ kitchen, whose menu is mostly Argentinean with some dishes of Spanish and Italian influences.

Since 2006, Almarco Italian Grill has held its spot in the heart of Huntington village’s Wall Street. Almarco is “new Italian with some traditional dishes,” said owner Mark Salese, describing the restaurant as “a cozy neighborhood restaurant.”

Food at Almarco is rooted in Italian tradition, and shines with expert preparation.

Like always, the year 2014 saw even more exciting changes in the Huntington restaurant scene - and also like always, the Long Islander News Foodies documented all of it!

What started as a realization that Huntington Station and Melville lacked a true Japanese-hibachi restaurant set the gears in motion to create 110 Japan, which marries both in a sprawling property along Walt Whitman Road. 

One side is fine dining, the other is more festive, family-oriented hibachi. But while the sign says sushi and hibachi – both of which 110 Japan excels at – there is plenty to dazzle diners even more!

Just past the towering public library and adjacent to the harbor is Cold Spring Harbor’s Harbor Mist Restaurant.

The restaurant is known to be an Italian seafood establishment, Manager Justin Visconti said, but really has “a little bit of everything.”

“We’re pretty diverse,” he said of the restaurant, which also does “a lot of catering.” Harbor Mist is nearly five years old now, Visconti said, and is owned by husband-and-wife Barman and Michelle Sharifi.

Past scattered trees dressed in white lights is the entrance to Melville’s Jewel – a colorful oasis hidden within an office building whose remaining floor space is home to corporate suits.

From the three-year-old restaurant’s ceiling hang bubble-esque spheres of white and yellow and auburn. Lights behind the far wall change color – red, blue, green, white – and the yellow light of the kitchen is visible from the dining room through a glass wall.

Become a regular at the Old Fields Restaurant in Greenlawn and you’ll never be behind the curve when it comes to the Long Island Rail Road! As the train rumbles by the restaurant, giving all inside a little shake, the staff at Old Fields keep track of its comings and goings on a small chalkboard by the door.

But the nearby train certainly isn't the only reason to dine at this rustic steakhouse with tons delicious choices!

While Mac’s Steakhouse is well known for and excels in its traditional steakhouse fare, owner Mark Gelish and his team are taking steps away from tradition into more creative cuisine – stepping up their game without stepping up their price.

A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America with 40 years of experience in the business, Mark has focused on value, freshness and all-natural, from-scratch fare since taking the wheel at Mac’s some six years ago.

Tables traced the outline of the room, their respective chefs behind them, as the Family Service League hosted its Great Chefs of Long Island event at Crest Hollow Country Club on Nov. 10.

Several dozen restaurants – including nine Town of Huntington establishments – prepared small plates to serve to ticket holders at the charity event.

Just after their one-year anniversary in the highly competitive Huntington restaurant scene, the team at Acacia, headed by owner Michael Cassano and chef Matthew Maxwell, is still proudly flexing their “mussels” to much acclaim.

The former stockbroker (Michael) and the decorated Culinary Institute of America grad (Matthew) opened the doors a year ago Oct. 13 after transforming the former Oak Room at Meehan’s into a cosmopolitan, Manhattan-inspired dining den, where 12 varieties of mussels pots are the menu’s focal point.

The distinctive characteristics of Huntington’s Porto Vivo are the details of its atmosphere. Menus come on iPads in leather-like cases, futuristic lighting fixtures caged within metal rectangles hang from the ceiling - and even the bathroom sinks are surrounded by glittering stone seas colored topaz and beige.

And to seal the deal, Porto Vivo's menu - featuring typical Italian pizzettes and pastas, as well as a slew of complex options - contains some absolutely mouth-watering delights.

Nearly 14 years on, Siobhan Mulroy and Steve Camas continue to fulfill their globetrotting culinary mission at 34 New Street, bringing the world to their doorstep – and your plate – in Huntington village.

When they opened the doors to 34 New Street restaurant in January 2001, their goal was a simple, wide-reaching one: create a home for creative world cuisine drawing from all corners of the globe.

“Prime is more than just a dinner; it’s an experience,” said Bohlsen (a co-owner of Huntington's Prime steakhouse), who was “born and raised in the restaurant business,” by a family that currently owns seven restaurants.

Many know Prime for their breath-taking views they have of the water - but Bohlsen says how they "do not compromise any of [their] standards because [they] have the view to fall back on." Prime takes the utmost pride in its elaborately ornate decor, and - most importantly - in their unwavering attention to serving top-quality dishes.
