When Joan and Paul Schreier ventured into the food industry in November 2011, they called their creation “Berry Healthy Café.” The café, sandwiched between arts and crafts store Michael’s and Five Guys Burgers and Fries in the shopping center beside the Walt Whitman mall, now goes by a new name: Berrylicious Café and Top-A-Pizza.

The “Top-A-Pizza” option – personalized pizzas made in 90 seconds – is new. Berry Healthy specialized in such offerings as smoothies, salads, wraps and frozen yogurt. Now, the name has changed and the menu features such options as pizza, wings and mozzarella sticks.

Jason Kitton’s XO Restaurant, Wine & Chocolate Lounge is coming into its own.

Now approaching the two-and-a-half year mark, Kitton’s “leap year baby” – the restaurant opened Feb. 29, 2012 after a brief sojourn on Clinton Street – continues to distinguish itself as a destination for fine, inventive dining, cocktails and fondue.

With its green-black marble-esque floors and wooden accents, Huntington village’s newly-opened Char Grille brings to the area both char-grilled meat and a Manhattan-style meeting place.

Even with the hum of heavy machinery nearby, passersby eagerly peek at the dishes of outdoor diners and through Char Grille's wide open, wooden-framed double doors.

Its façade now masked by metal fence signifying municipal parking lot construction, Massa’s Coal-Fired Brick Oven Pizzeria is a hidden rustic oasis.

The Huntington Village pizzeria came to its current location in February and offers a menu that is its own take on the traditional, meant to provide patrons with pizza reminiscent of the coal-fired concoctions of Italy. And though the Town of Huntington has closed the Gerard Street parking lot that faces its entrance for reconstruction, the doors of Massa’s are still wide open!

While the little eatery on New York Avenue is under new ownership – Vinnie Abbatiello, who owns Jeff’s Seafood in Halesite, took over in mid-March after closing the deal with Bravo! Nader owner, Nader Gebrin – and has a new look and some new menu items, the mission remains the same: give customers great food at an equally great price.

The waitress leads the way. When she arrives at a large rectangular table set for two, within a wrap-around booth that could easily seat six, she pulls the table out and into the aisle for ease of sitting. She waits for guests to take their seats and then replaces the table.

At Melville’s Blackstone Steakhouse, this sort of service matches both clientele attire and the prices next to menu items. Its ownership, Anthony Scotto Restaurants, also owns steak-and-sushi establishments Rare650 in Syosset and Insignia in Smithtown.

World Cup fever has taken hold of a popular Huntington locale known for inventive small plates and a selection of wines by the glass that’s second to none.

At Bin 56, located – where else? – at 56 Stewart Ave. in Huntington village – a string of miniature flags, representing each of the 32 nations that qualified for this World Cup, hangs on the awning, and will remain there until the Cup concludes, with the related fervor making Bin 56 a hot-spot place to be!

On tap at Huntington’s Osteria Da Nino are six whites, six reds and four beers, as the Main Street establishment, open once again after recent renovations, introduced its wines on tap last Thursday.

Fresh, wholesome food is truly a family affair at the new Mazzar Grill in Halesite.

Zabie Mustafa, who works full-time as an architect during the week and helps his parents, Frank and Shaokira, on the weekends, launched the Middle Eastern-inspired eatery six weeks ago with hopes of sharing “fresh and honest,” simply-prepared cuisine, drawing inspiration from their roots in Uzbekistan and Afghanistan.
