And now, Varipapa, who was born in Italy in 1891, is once again in the spotlight – nearly 31 years after he passed away on Aug. 25, 1984 - because he was recently named as Wheaties’ newest pitchman.

Twenty years ago, A.J. Preller was preparing to step onto the baseball diamond for the Wildcats of Walt Whitman High School. Today, the Class of 1995 graduate prepares to send a team of his own out onto the diamond: the San Diego Padres.

On August 6, 2014, Preller was named the general manager of the Major League Baseball (MLB) club and became the second-youngest general manager in professional baseball.

The Walt Whitman High School varsity cheer team reaped the rewards of more than six months of dedicated practice, becoming the first cheer team in the school’s history to make it to the finals in the National High School Cheerleading Championship (NHSCC).

The team last week competed against the top 54 teams for the small varsity Division 1 category in the 2015 NHSCC preliminary round in Walt Disney World, Florida. They were one of 27 teams to advance to the semifinals and moved to the finals for the first time in Wildcats history. They went on to finish 17th in the nation.

Greenlawn native Mike Fagan took that advice, and with it, won his second Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) major and fifth pro title – the PBA World Championship, contested at South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas Jan. 11.

Halfway through what has so far been “a successful season,” as its coach described it, the Commack High School girls fencing team has marked a milestone: a win over Ward Melville that marks the end of Ward Melville’s 195-game winning streak and has pushed Commack to the no. 1 spot in the league.

Until Commack’s team achieved the 14-13 victory on Jan. 6, Ward Melville had not lost a game in 10 years, Commack Coach Robert Raeihle said.

“Finally we’re moving out of the shadow of Ward Melville,” Raeihle said.

Starting fast is something Michael Porcello, head coach of the Northport/Huntington Ice Hockey Club, emphasizes as his team prepares for a playoff push in the Suffolk County High School Hockey League.

On Sunday, though, Northport/Huntington (13-3) struggled with that as it found itself behind 1-0 less than two minutes into play against Half Hollow Hills (3-11-1).

When it comes to 2014 accomplishments on the soccer pitch, St. Anthony’s High School is the bee’s knees.

Both the boys and girls teams were crowned New York State champions. Both teams were state champions in the same season for just the second time in school history. For the boys, the Friars repeated as state champs. Boys Head Coach Gene Buonaiuto earned his 400th career win. And the girls’ head coach, Dave Prutting, won his 21st state title and retired with a record of 437-46-19 over a 27-year career.

For Elwood’s Blue Wave youth wrestling program, the word “team” describes more than just the boys who suit up and take to the wrestling mats sporting the Blue Wave name at tournaments all over the Northeast. During practices, parents double as coaches, older siblings do the same, and alumni or friends of the program often make appearances to help out the up-and-comers.

When Head Coach Thomas Giaramita built Blue Wave wrestling in 1999, he started more than just a team, he started a family; a family set on the goal of building an Elwood wrestling dynasty.

The Northport High School bowling team came to a halt in 2011 when beloved math teacher Elliot Klein was diagnosed with brain cancer and left the bowling program - and when Klein passed away in June 2013, it seemed as if the Lady Tigers bowling program (which had seen middling interest over the years) might die alongside him.

Thankfully, the Lady Tigers have rebuilt the program over the years, and are beginning to come back strong!
