The gray skies didn’t stop Huntington High School from hosting their Homecoming Day on Saturday. Student-made floats, music and dance routines by the Highsteppers and Ready Step dance made up the annual parade and made for a “tremendous community celebration,” said Huntington Superintendent James Polansky.

“It’s a day that brings the entire community together to celebrate” the good in Huntington, Polansky said. “And, it didn’t rain on our parade.”

Each of the high school’s four classes constructed their parade floats over five hours the night before. Polansky described that planning for homecoming involved the students “diligently” constructing their floats.

Huntington High School’s senior class won the homecoming float competition with its Yellow Submarine float.

“They adorn them with everything under the sun. It takes quite a bit of time and quite a bit of detail to get them right. That’s also a spirited contest among the classes,” he said.

The senior class won the float competition, outscoring the juniors, freshmen and sophomores.

Blue Devils quarterback John Paci completes a touchdown pass in the second quarter, bringing Huntington to 14-0 against Centereach.

In the second quarter, quarterback John Paci launched the ball to receiver Taqwan Gooden-Hill for 30-yard touchdown. Veliz again converted the extra point to extend Huntington’s lead to 14-0.

“It felt good to put the first points on the board, but there was a lot of game left and we needed our players to keep going hard,” stated Steve Muller, Huntington’s head coach. “The last thing any of us wanted was for anyone to let up.”

Centereach kicked a field goal in the second quarter and scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter, but Huntington staved off the comeback attempt.

The Blue Devils are set to take the field again on Saturday, when they’re set to kickoff at 2:15 p.m. at Half Hollow Hills High School East.
