‘Bongiorno Blast’ Raises $68K For Cancer-Stricken Family

“Just to see them all there, it was beautiful. It was like a huge family reunion that I wish we could have been there for,” said John Bongiorno, a former Northport resident who was diagnosed with cancer within weeks of his wife, Michele. The two are now being treated at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

To help pay for the family’s $4,000 in monthly medical bills, members of the Northport Yacht Club held a fundraiser on Saturday, raising $68,000. More 350 people turned out for the event at St. Philip Neri Parish Center.

The eighth annual Charles “Chuck” Varese JOLT (Jaws of Life) Vehicle Extrication Tournament, held May 9 at Steers Park in Northport, featured 15 teams of volunteers.

Families, Friends, Residents Raise $114K For St. Baldrick’s

For the last four years, several members of the Finnegan family have been helping to raise money for childhood-cancer research through the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. First one Finnegan attended, then two or three, and eventually St. Baldrick’s became a staple event for the family.

Four generations of Finnegans made their way out to Northport for the annual group shave at Napper Tandy’s Irish Pub and shaved their heads in the communal effort to find a cure.

Commack High School has raised $470,00 over the last six years for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation - and this year, the Commack School District hosted its annual fundraiser in the gym of Commack High School on March 6 and saw 250 “shavees” go bald to the tune of $85,000, and counting, raised this year.

An unprecedented concert for an unprecedented man.

On Jan. 10 at Northport High School, 600 high school and local musicians came together to celebrate the memory of the late Robert W. Krueger – a longtime Northport resident and founder of the Northport Community Band who died in September 2013 at 86 years old. The newly renovated auditorium at the high school, which was completed late last year, was rededicated in Krueger’s name as The Robert W. Krueger Center for the Performing Arts.

‘Udderly’ Amazing Cow Harbor 10K Returns

The 37th anniversary running of the “cows” - also known as the Great Cow Harbor Weekend - is set to bring some of the world’s top runners – as well as scores of weekend warriors from this area – to pound the pavement of Northport Village.

At 8:30 a.m. sharp Sept. 20, the first of 15 waves of 10K runners will begin their race through Northport, a new wave starting the race every minute. The last group – a wave of 2K Fun Run/Walk participants, will compete to raise money for the Special Olympics New York, the Northport VA Hospital and the local food pantry.
