Plainview-based developer Renaissance Downtowns broke ground last week on the first phase of its $2.5 billion revitalization project in downtown Hempstead.

Both Nassau County and Hempstead Village officials were on scene for the groundbreaking ceremony, which got the ball rolling on the project that is expected to create 2,000 construction job years and 6,000 permanent full-time jobs; garner $30 million in infrastructure grants; and generate $39 million in annual tax revenue, according to statistics provided by Hempstead Village officials.

Plans include construction of mixed-use housing, retail stores and corporate offices.
