Gas Leak In Melville Evacuates 3 Buildings, Closes Part Of Route 110

A natural gas leak has caused three buildings to be evacuated and closed part of Route 110 in Melville, Suffolk police said.

According to a police spokeswoman, Second Precinct police officers responded to a report of a gas leak inside a building at 685 Walt Whitman Road at around 1:10 p.m.

Police said no injuries were reported, but the building, which is occupied by liquor store Barrels & Stills, was evacuated. Nearby buildings at 677 Walt Whitman Road) and 691 Walt Whitman Road were also evacuated.

Police said one lane of southbound Route 110 is open at West Lyons Street, but National Grid, which also responded, has closed the left lane.

The Melville Fire Department also responded and is investigating.
