After overdosing on heroin, a Commack man crashed his car into another vehicle carrying a mother and her two children last week, Suffolk police said.
Several drivers called 911 to report Michael Amico, 51, for recklessly driving southbound on Broadhollow Road in Melville at around 6 p.m. on March 31.
Police said Amico drove a 2011 Subaru onto the sidewalk and crashed into a fire hydrant. The vehicle, which was still traveling after the impact, then hit the side of a Land Rover carrying a woman and her two children, who were uninjured.
The Subaru eventually came to a stop at 610 Broadhollow Road, around 1,500 feet from the original crash, police said.
Melville Fire Department Rescue Squad responded to the scene and found Amico unresponsive due to an apparent overdose. First responders revived him by administering Narcan and transported Amico to Huntington Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. As of Monday’s deadline, Amico was still under care at Huntington Hospital.
Police said they arrested Amico and charged him with driving while ability impaired by drugs. As of Monday, he was scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip at a later time.
