A Tuesday-morning blaze severely damaged a home on Seaman Neck Road in Dix Hills.
Some residents were jarred awake as responders from at least four local departments rushed to the home, located at 28 Seaman Neck Road.
The cause of the fire was unclear at press time Tuesday morning. The most severe damage appeared to be concentrated in the rear of the home, where the first floor was almost totally destroyed and the charred roof sagged toward the backyard. Firefighters could be seen shooting water through the charred frame and stripping burnt beams.
Dix Hills Fire Department volunteers comforted the homeowners at the scene, who were too upset to talk about the incident.
Neighbors milled around the scene shortly after 10 a.m. while dozens of firefighters continued their efforts to fully extinguish the blaze. The blaze closed Seaman Neck Road between Claredon Street and Maryland Street through mid-morning.
Dix Hills took the lead on the response to the blaze, with aid from Wyandanch, Deer Park and Melville Fire Departments; Greenlawn Fire Department and the Huntington Community First Aid Squad provided stand-by coverage at Dix Hills FD headquarters.
