HOME OF SPUMONI:
The mecca for Spumoni lovers is L&B Spumoni Garden in Brooklyn’s Bensonhurst section. If you can’t get there, though, there’s a limited supply straight from 86th street stashed in the freezer at Rosa’s Pizza (313 Main Street, Huntington Village). Spumoni is a descendant of the Neapolitan, that sliced ice cream that combines vanilla, chocolate and strawberry in a frozen loaf that’s served sliced. Most kids eat around the rest and just go for the chocolate. Not so with Spumoni, whose multi-colored, multi-flavored layers commonly involve bits of candied fruit and pistachio nuts. It all gets eaten.

ON THE ROAD: Huntington restaurant mogul John Tunney (Honu, Besito and American Burger Company) adds to the burger half of his restaurant empire with the opening of American Roadside Burgers (80 East Main St., Smithtown) this month. Putting a thematic spin on the Huntington-based American Burger Company with a new branch in Hicksville, American Roadside Burgers is an “Ode to the Road” with distressed black leather (think biker) booths, hardwood floors, barn siding, and a farm sink that give it a someplace-along-Route 66 look. WIFI-equipped and hung with road warrior art, there’s also a brand new Yamaha Road Star motorcycle plunked in the middle. The bike will be given away on May 28 — National Hamburger Day. Everyone who eats a jumbo-sized Roadside Famous Road Star Burger will be entered to win, and get their name put on the Roadside Wall of Fame! Word around town is that the Stony Brook University rugby team will be camping out before the opening to make sure they?re the first to eat the famous Road Star and get their names on the wall. If you stop by their opening week, there’s free cheeseburgers, free merchandise and a whole lotta free fun.

SUNDAY PRIX FIXE: Jonathan’s Ristorante (15 Wall Street, 631 549-0055) announces its Italian Sunday Prix Fixe menu, every Sunday from 4- 9 pm at $29 per. REHEAT PIZZA: Stay away from that microwave! Heat up leftover pizza in a non-stick skillet on top of the stove, set heat to med-low and heat till warm. This keeps the crust crispy. Compliments of the cooking channel.

THE BUZZ: We Foodies are constantly sticking our noses in things, sniffing out food news and asking a lot of questions. On a trip to Mediavilla Orchards (1257 E. Jericho Turnpike, Huntington), we learned that our second favorite apple variety – Macoun – is a cross between a Macintosh and Arkansas Black. Our favorite – Honey Crisp. We also learned that Mediavilla has beehives on the property and sells jars of honey produced right in the backyard. Never having met a beekeeper, we asked Mrs. Pombo, “Who makes the honey?” She replied: “The bees.”

TRICKY TREAT: Moms can easily make Halloween healthier without being booed by the kids, according to the American Dairy Association. Their official drink of Halloween is a healthy treat in disguise; chocolate milk is packed with calcium and other essential nutrients that growing kids need. Milk provides nine essential nutrients, and according is the primary beverage source of calcium, magnesium, and potassium. For a Halloween treat, mix up a batch of Creepy Black Forest Haunted Smoothies. In blender, mix 1 cup crushed ice, 1 cup low fat chocolate milk, 1/2 cup plain lowfat yogurt, 2 tbsps chocolate syrup and 3 tbsps maraschino cherry juice; blend 30 seconds, and pour into a tall glass. Top with whipped cream and creepy cherry chocolate chip eyes. (To make eyes: with a paper towel, pat dry the number of cherries you would like to make. Stick a chocolate chip into the center of the cherry.)
