FOODIE BLUNDER: Although
we are accurate with our food reviews and info, sometimes
the romantic atmosphere goes to our heads and this time we
put our “foots in our mouths,” instead of the
food. Last week’s review of Trattoria Grasso raved about
their wonderful food and jazz but also mistakenly said that
Gail Grasso, the restaurant’s gracious proprietor and
Ernie Byrd, the talented musical director, are married. We
don’t know where that came from other than the magic
in the air and the beautiful music they make together in the
delightful place. Well, we’ve been set straight; the
two are not married and we have no idea what either does in
the few off hours that each is away from Grasso. Sorry Gail
and Ernie.
JAZZ ON THE TERRACE: The
Foodies recently reviewed Trattoria Grasso in Cold Spring
Harbor (see above) and told you of their wonderful jazz that
complemented their wonderful food. This Sunday, May 28, will
kickoff their second year of Jazz on the Terrace. Live music
will be presented on the terrace each Sunday, weather permitting,
3-6 p.m. Stop by, have something cool and enjoy or you’re
invited to just sit on the benches across the street and take
in the soulful jazz of Ernie Byrd and Friends and a beautiful
town.

PASTA PRIMAVERA: The popular
Italian dish “Pasta primavera” is really a new
American dish… well, sort of. The story goes that in
May 1975 a group of US chefs were traveling to Canada for
a culinary meeting. One of the group, Sirio Maccioni owner
of New York’s famed La Cirque threw together a pasta
dish for the group. Using what was handy, spaghetti, fresh
vegetables, frozen peas and cream, he pleased the critical
critics who asked for the name of the dish. “Primavera”
means “spring” in Italian and Maccioni quickly
dubbed it “spaghetti primavera.” The New York
Times’ Craig Clairborne, who was one of the traveling
group, popularized it in his column forcing Le Cirque to serve
the in-demand dish.
WINE AT THE MANSION: The
ninth annual wine tasting fundraiser of the Melville Lions
Club will be held on June 8, at 6 p.m. at the spectacular
Gold Coast mansion at the de Seversky Center of Old Westbury.
The gala, featuring fine wine and gourmet foods from the area's
premier wineries and restaurants, showcases more than 30 vendors
offering delicacies for your dining pleasure. The lavish,
black-tie optional evening of music, fine food and wine is
topped off with a wine auction held in the stately library.
The 1918 neo-classical Georgian mansion, formerly the Du Pont
estate, is a feast unto itself. Arthur, starring Dudley Moore
and Liza Minnelli had numerous scenes filmed in the stately
building.
