THANKSGIVING LEFTOVER HEAVEN: You’re going
to love us for this one. We credit niece Debbie who came over
for our Thanksgiving dinner two years ago, and didn’t
leave for another couple of days. She did however, serve up
the most wonderful treat using all the leftovers from our
Thanksgiving feast. It’s easy, quick and you gotta try
it – the Foodies favorite Thankgiving Leftovers Panini.
Panini start with hard bread typically a ciabatta but a foccicio
or any herb-filled crusty thinnish but dense bread will do
– even a bit stale adds character (two slices of sliced
hard bread will work too). That’s all you’ll need
besides your holiday leftovers. The loaf gets cut horizontally
and layered with: cold gravy, thinly sliced turkey, dark and/or
light, stuffing, cranberry sauce, whatever else turns you
on – last year on Friday, we added sweet potato planks,
and sliced broccoli sautéed in garlic, leftover from
Thursday’s meal. You can add a second layer of any or
all of the ingredients. Season with some salt, ground pepper,
chopped basil or sage, then oil a grill, skillet (Or you can
even use your outdoor grill; if it’s a gas grill, keep
the burners below the sandwich on low and the other burners
on high or coals stacked away from the sandwich – grilled
closed.) Toast one side till golden brown; press down for
10 seconds with a heavy spatula or skillet; turn; toast, and
then press down again. We promise it will give Thanksgiving
food a whole new life. Enjoy!

BLISS: It’s a bit of a trip –
about 40 minutes from our Main Street, Huntington Village
office – but at the end there is Bliss. At 766 Route
25A in East Setauket, Bliss (631-941-0430) is a restaurant
worth trying. If you’re lucky, Chef Richard Desmond
will come out of the kitchen to sing an aria as melodic as
the food he prepares for your table. An exciting new American
menu, a beautiful dining room, wine and candlelight are sure
to bring you Bliss.
FAST FOOD NATION: The NY Times called it:
“The most essential political film from an American
director since Michael Moore’s ‘Farenheit 911.’”
And it’s at Cinema Arts Center beginning November 17.
Director Richard Linklater (Before Sunrise, Before Sunset,
A Scanner Darkly) dramatizes Eric Schlosser’s highly
acclaimed book, Fast Food Nation, about the fast food corporation
production and marketing of their chemically scented ersatz
hamburgers, starring Patricia Arquette, Paul Dano, Luis Guzman,
Ethan Hawke, Greg Kinnear, Bruce Willis, Kris Kristofferson,
Avril Lavigne. You’ll eat this film up and Cinema Arts
serves healthy snacks.

SPICE JOB: We reported on the buzz that Penzeys
Spices was going to open a store in Huntington Station. Well,
the store-to-be at 326 Walt Whitman Road is now hiring. They’re
looking for employees who have a customer-oriented personality,
a love for food and spices, and enjoy a physically active
work environment, adding: “If you have the passion for
cooking and baking, this may be the job for you.” Job
applications at www.penzeys.com.
HOSPITAL FOOD: Nope, it’s not still
the same ol’, same ol’. Hospital food rocks! North
Shore-LIJ Hospital Systems is not only the largest employer
on Long Island, it is a hotbed for hospital culinary arts
feeding more than 35,000 people making it the Island’s
largest caterer. Dozens of chefs and food service professionals
from nine NSLIJ hospitals gathered recently to be honored
for their high quality food and a wide variety of healthy,
innovative menu items. Huntington Hospital was one of the
award winners. You might want tostop by and try their “Park
& View” Cafe (named for the corner of Park Ave and
View Acre Drive) or perhaps you’d prefer to plan your
next stay and sumptuous meal there. Congrats to them.
TURKEY: A lady was picking through the frozen
turkeys at the grocery store, but couldn’t find one
big enough for her family. She asked a stock boy, “Do
these turkeys get any bigger?” The stock boy replied,
“No ma’am, they’re dead.”
