CHEESE, GLORIOUS CHEESE: Last time you went to a cheese shop in Huntington village, your shopping trips probably included stops at Oscar’s Books, Snappy Shoes and Toytown. Well, we can’t say any of them are coming back, but at long last, there’s a cheese monger on the way. The Ideal Cheese company is moving into the back of The Crushed Olive on Huntington’s Main Street. And while their marketing wizards may have been out to lunch when it came time to choose a catchy name for their cheese shop, Ideal Cheese brings a stellar reputation, earned over 56 years at 1st Avenue and 52nd Street in New York City. Named by Forbes.com as the “World’s Best Cheese Shop,” Ideal carries an international selection of some 250 cheeses from 17 countries. Not for nothin’… but between all that cheese and all that tasty olive oil and vinegar, it’s just not going to be safe to be a loaf of crusty bread.

CHEESECAKE DAY: July 30 is National Cheesecake Day. What will you do to celebrate? Might be a good time to head for The Cheesecake Factory (160 Walt Whitman Road, Huntington Station 631-271-8200). They’ll celebrate National Cheesecake Day by offering guests who dine in any slice of cheesecake for half price on July 30. Their newest flavor, which is the result of a partnership with the world’s favorite cookie, is Oreo Dream Extreme.

HAPPEO BIRTHEO: Speaking of Oreo’s, guess who’s celebrating their 100th birthday? The Oreo Cookie entered its second century on March 6 of this year. First developed as the “Oreo Biscuit” by Nabisco at its factory in New York City’s Chelsea area, the Oreo was actually a knockoff of Sunshine’s Hydrox cookie, which is four years older. Needless to say, the Oreo surpassed the Hydrox prototype, and according to Nabisco is the world’s most popular cookie today with annual sales surpassing $2 billion worldwide. That’s a lot of cookies, and in a perfect world, every one of them would be eaten by first twisting apart the chocolate cookies and scraping off the sugary white filling with your front teeth.

SPEAKING OF 100th BIRTHDAYS: The party continues at Finnegan’s Restaurant and Tap Room – and it hasn’t even begun yet! The landmark Huntington eatery (and drinkery) is celebrating its 100th anniversary on July 28 with a party on Wall Street that will include a bartender’s reunion, among other festivities. Leading up to the big day, there are specials every day and night of the week starting Thursday, July 5. Offerings are as follows: Sunday-Picnic Basket with buttermilk fried chicken, coleslaw, corn stick and sweet potato fries ($14.25); Monday-Soft Shell Crab ($15.95); Tuesday-Yankee Pot Roast ($14.50); Wednesday-Corned Beef and Cabbage ($13.50); Thursday-Chef’s Pasta ($14.95); Friday-Mussels Pot with Fries ($14.95); and Saturday- Jack Daniels Honey BBQ Ribs ($15.95).
