TASTE OF SOUTHERN ITALY: The high point (in our opinion) of
Italian Week at Porto Vivo (7 Gerard St., Huntington 631-385-8486
www.porto-vivo.com) comes tonight, Thursday, March 1 with
Chef Joseph Balbos six-course tasting menu with wine
pairings. Dinner starts at 7 p.m. with tuna crudo antipasti:
sliced hamachi tuna with toasted pignoli, arugula and black
olive faux caviar with salmorilgio sauce, paired with Grillo
by AZ Vitivinicola, Tonnino Sicily. Course two pesce
is grilled swordfish with fennel, tomato, citrus basil
compote and blood orange emulsion, paired with a Sauvignon
Blanc (Villa Di Grazia) by Marco Maci Vini, Puglia. The pasta
course: sheeps milk ricotta gnocchi with sausage and
broccoli rabe paired with Pecorino Primitivo by Marco Maci,
Puglia. Pouring with the main course of lamb loin with eggplant
puree, roasted artichoke and crispy fried Nero-soaked grapes
will be Nero DAvola by Vitivinicola Tonnino, Sicily;
and a second entrée of braised beef short rib will
be accompanied by Negroamaro by Marco Maci, Puglia. Dolci,
or dessert, is Torta Della Nonna, a sheeps milk torte
with Sicilian pistachio gelato, fragola reduction and Sicilan
hone, is paired with Zibibbo by Maremonti Sas, Sicily. The
six-course meal starts at 7 p.m. in the fireplace dining room
and reservations are a must. Youll be speaking the language
before you leave.
TIME FOR TEA: We spend a lot of time talking about coffee
in this column without ever giving tea a fair shake. So here
we go
follow American tea expert David Lee Hoffman to
China in search of the worlds finest teas at a screening
of All In This Tea, Tuesday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m.,
followed by a tea-tasting at Cinema Arts Centre (423 Park
Ave, Huntington 631-423-7611 www.CinemaArtsCentre.org). $9
for members, $13 for non-members includes a reception and
tea-tasting by The Tea Plant and Sacred Rose. Its part
of Cinema Arts Centres Lets Eat! Films on
Food series that explores the world of food.
