HURRICANE SEASON: The cocktail
of the week at restaurants across the Island was the Hurricane,
a citrusy rum concoction first popularized in New Orleans.
The Hurricane became popular in the 1940's after making its
debut at the 1939 World's Fair. It was named for the hurricane
lamp-shaped glasses the drink was served in. It's said that
bar owner Pat O'Brien created the rum-heavy drink in order
to get rid of a large stock of rum his distributors forced
him to buy. To make a Hurricane, squeeze juice from half a
lime into shaker over ice, add 2 oz. each light and dark rum,
2 oz. passion fruit juice, 1 oz. orange juice, 1 tbsp. simple
syrup, shake well. Strain it into a hurricane glass, and garnish
with a cherry and an orange slice. Earthquakes, hurricanes
lets just pray next weeks drink isnt the
asteroid. Cheers!
HURRICANE FARE: Post-Irene dining on Sunday afternoon was
pretty limited. At Skippers Pub in Northport a generator
supplied all the juice needed for a post-Irene party. Otherwise,
about the only places to grab a bite to eat were pizzerias
where little more than a gas oven is all thats needed
to feed the masses. And line up they did. In Huntington village,
Little Vincents and Rosas Pizza were doing a booming
business by candlelight. On Wall Street, Juniors Pizza
owner Mark Salese was able to hook up a generator that powered
some interior lights, the television and the DVD player. The
electric paper towel dispenser in the bathroom also had juice.
HUNTINGTON SOCIAL(330 New York Avenue, Huntington 631-631-942-2442
www.huntingtonsocial.com), the prohibition era/speakeasy-themed
gastro pub located in the former Chesterfields, upstairs at
New York Avenue and Main Street, has opened again. After a
stellar debut, an electrical fire in a wall panel forced the
restaurant to close for repairs. During the period of time
it was closed, a very favorable New York Times review put
the place on every local Foodies radar. Happily, Huntington
Social reopened last Thursday and not to be kept down again,
kept going even through Hurricane Irene. Hats off to an intrepid
crew. Heres hoping for nothing but smooth sailing ahead.
