LAST CHANCE: The cook is in at Cooke's Inn (767 New York Avenue, Huntington 631-424-2181), but not for long. Juanita Cooke is closing for good on June 20 to enjoy a second retirement, so stop in and enjoy one last time. Friday and Saturday nights feature a piano bar.

HI-PERFORMANCE: The valet parking guys at Prime had the night of their lives when Ferrari Maserati of Long Island selected Prime – an American Kitchen and Bar  (117 New York Ave., Huntington 631-385-1515 www.restaurantprime.com) for a party to unveil the 2009 Ferrari California. The parking lot was packed with Ferraris, Maseratis and other high-performance vehicles. Inside, guests snacked on canapés and cocktails, including some created expressly for the event. Executive Chef Gregg Lauletta’s hors d’oeuvres included a white tuna tartar topped with a dollop of "Ferrari red" caviar. Beverage Director Paulo Villela went with an Italian theme for his Testarossa cocktail, a concoction of vodka, Limoncello, Campari and cranberry juice.

NORTHPORT AL FRESCO: The decision by Northport Village trustees to allow sidewalk and patio dining has transformed the downtown dining scene. If the legislation was born of the current economic downturn, we say bring on another recession. When the weather’s right – and even when it’s not so right – foodies dining al fresco add to the village’s charm. The hottest spot is proving to be a previously unused space adjacent to the Mara Building on Woodbine now shared by Tim’s Shipwreck Diner and Maroni’s. Thank you, Northport Village.

SURVEY SAYS: You’d be hard-pressed not to find some local winners in the fast food survey conducted by readers of Zagat’s, the publisher of pocket guides for foodies. First things first: the 6,107 people who participated in the survey named Starbucks the best coffee, with Dunkin’ Donuts finishing second. Foodwise, among mega-chains, McDonald’s took best French fry while Wendy’s was ranked first for food and facilities. Subway was voted No. 1 for healthy options. Among smaller chains (under 5,000 locations) Panera Bread was voted most popular and No. 1 for facilities, healthy options and salads. Milkshake mavens gave the nod to Ben & Jerry’s. California Pizza Kitchen was favored for healthy options, and The Cheesecake Factory topped a few categories, including best value, best coffee and best desserts.

WELL RESTED: When it comes to grilling, experts say the secret to a juicy steak is allowing the meat to rest. A few minutes off the grill prior to cutting allows the juices to be reabsorbed and redistributed evenly. Unfortunately the meat also begins to cool. Enter GrillTenders, makers of the newest "must have" grilling accessory for tender, juicy, steak, chicken and roasts. GrillTenders’ Original Meat Resting Blanket thermally insulates meat when it comes off the grill and allows you to rest the meat without cooling. The GrillTender acts to keep the "heat in the meat" while you get the rest of the meal served. Available in six fabrics, it’s $34.95. Go to www.GrillTenders.com.
