FAIR TRADE:
If you haven’t yet learned about Georgio’s coffee roasters (146 W. Jericho Tpke, Huntington Station, 631.470.7797, www.georgioscoffee.com), get yourself there. Georgio is a shaman of coffee, and he roasts what he sells himself. For the holidays – and feel free to put the Foodies on your holiday gift list – Georgio offers fair trade gift baskets. Not just fair trade coffees, but the baskets themselves – handmade by farmers in Columbia – or bags made from Cruz de Fibre, a Columbian company that supports the sustainability cause. Baskets and bags are sold separately, or go ahead and fill one with freshly roasted fair trade coffee, biscotti, chocolates and the like. If it’s for this Foodie, feel free to add one of those nifty LaVazza espresso machines.

SAVE THE DATE: One of the finest Foodie traditions in this neck of the woods isn’t quite tradition yet, but we’re working on it. Back for its second year is the fave Sweets and Spirits fundraising event. Combining fine wines and chocolate, this event was dreamed up by the folks at Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition. It’s Jan. 29 at Appliance World in Huntington. Call HBCC at 631.547.1518 for tickets.

Prix Fixe: Here’s a great chance to try the legendary Mirabelle Restaurant (404 North Country Rd., St. James, 631.584.5999, www.restaurantmirabelle.com). Chef Guy Rouges has extended the Long Island Restaurant Week prix fixe menu through December. Three courses for $24.95 every night except Saturdays when it will be offered only for reservations from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The prix fixe will not be available holidays. The regular menu will also be offered. The choices: start with leek and potato soup or a salad of frisée lettuce, organic hard-boiled eggs, bacon and mustard vinaigrette, or try a beef carpaccio with shaved Parmesan, sea salt, extra virgin olive oil, and mâche lettuce. Entrée choices include Coq au vin with carrots, pearl onions, Yukon gold potato purée, and lardon bacon; Arctic Char with an autumn vegetable medley, citrus vinaigrette, savory cranberry jam; or a ragout of herb gnocchi, matignon of squash and bouillon, and mushroom duxelle. For dessert, choose from lemon cheesecake or apple fritter and green apple sorbet, or the chocolate panna cotta with pistachio cream, crystaline, and chocolate ganache. You can’t go wrong.

More PRIX FIXE: That Restaurant Week promotion seems to have brought in the customers, so it’s no surprise that so many restaurants are keeping it going. We’ve already told you about several in recent weeks, now add these Huntington restaurants to the bandwagon: Jonathan’s Ristorante (15 Wall Street, Huntington, 631.549.0055) is offering a winter prix fixe Sunday through Wednesday all night. The prix fixe includes three courses for $27 and the regular menu is, of course, available. Over in Greenlawn, Ruvo Restaurant (63 Broadway, Greenlawn, 631.261.7700, www.ruvorestaurant.com) is serving a dinner prix fixe Sunday through Wednesday beginning at 4 p.m. The cost is $26 per person plus tax and gratuity. Menu includes antipasti selections, entrée and dessert.

EASY GIFTING: Foodies are not difficult people to buy gifts for. There’s always room for another gadget in the kitchen drawer, and if all else fails, a restaurant gift certificate is always welcome. We can’t think of a restaurant that doesn’t offer gift certificates, and with restaurant traffic slowing in this uncertain economy, you’ll be doing your part to help your favorite restaurant through challenging times, and hopefully, send the restaurant new customers.
