FOODIE
A Golden Choice
24 Hours A Day
By Brian Rafferty/ foodie@longislandernews.com
It may not look like much,
perched near the top of the downtown area, shielded by an
otherwise bland façade, but the Golden Dolphin is a
true diner of old, with the massive laminated menu, the friendly
wait staff who call you Hon and Doll,
and the harried cook peeking out to see just how crowded the
place is.
Truth be told, he probably doesnt have to do it too
often, because from the looks of it, this place is always
packed and for good reason; big portions, fair prices
and a menu straight out of My Big Fat Greek diner.
For those who consider their tastebuds to be too refined for
a diner, think again. Golden Dolphins pot roast is divine,
the salads are crisp and fresh with plenty to choose from
and the breakfast, burgers and sandwiches are all comfort
food done to a tee.
Heck, if you want to know how good the place is, just ask
Town Supervisor Frank Petrone who was lunching there with
some friends this Monday.
But dont just take it from Frank take it upon
yourself to try one of the paninis. The latest in diner food,
paninis are making their way to the lunch counter and booths
all across diner-land, and Golden Dolphin is no slouch in
this department. You can try the Pilgrim, with turkey, tomato,
grilled onions and Swiss cheese, or perhaps the Goodfellas,
with prosciuto, salami, roasted red peppers, tomatoes and
mozzarella, or my favorite, the All American, with roast beef,
grilled onion and your choice of American or cheddar cheese.
At $9.95 each (that includes fries, cole slaw and a pickle),
and with the massive size of the platter, these are not only
a filling lunch, but a great deal, to boot.
On the lighter side the salads look like they should come
with a set of tongs to dole out to a family, but they are
meant as individual meals keeping with what seems to
be Golden Dolphins tradition one dish will fill
you up.
Just ask the guy who sat next to me at the counter and ordered
a bowl of what he called the most delicious chicken
soup and a toasted bagel. The bagel was oversized and
the soup was filled with noodles and chunks of meat.
He ordered them, and the waitress asked if he wanted them
at the same time.
Yes, he said, but not together.
She chuckled, he laughed, and life went on at Golden Dolphin
as it does 24 hours a day.
