Enjoy Munday Any Day Of The Week

You might think that a burger joint on Main Street in Huntington just off New York Avenue wants to be something more – the adult re-imagining of a childhood classic. But Peter Pan must make Munday’s his home away from home, because this is a place that clearly refuses to grow up – and we are all the better for it.

Stopping in on a recent early afternoon – a Monday, in fact – there were groups of families waiting for tables but I was able to sneak in and sidle up to the counter. My server was offering me a menu before I could even get my coat off and I had already been told what to order first, so without batting an eye I asked for a black and white.
For those of you who do not know what I’m talking about, you may have lived a very sheltered youth; it’s simply a vanilla shake with chocolate syrup – the best shake there is.

And Munday’s does it just right, taking time in the mixer – not the hooded version you see all over the place these days, but the old-fashioned kind that you stick the stainless steel cup up into – and they make sure that it is thick, yet drinkable through a straw. The overflow from the glass in which it is served is handed to you alongside in a small water glass.

What else could be the perfect accompaniment to the shake but the burger? In this case it was a true patty melt ($6.95), served medium rare with grilled onions and American cheese on rye bread. The burger was divine; it was still a bit pink inside, had a great sear on the outside and had just the right amount of juices that your fingers get wet, but the liquid doesn’t run down your arm.

The side of onion rings was also a delight, with whole rings, batter-dipped and fried to a crisp ($3.95 extra with the burger).

And yes, Munday’s has plenty of options beyond the burgers, and they all sound great: the Barbecue Beef Sandwich ($8.95), the Grilled Bratwurst Sandwich ($9.95) and the Grilled Tuna Special ($10.95) clearly stood out, and I can’t wait to go back on a Wednesday night when beer batter Fish and Chips are offered. You can also check back in on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights for Meatloaf, Turkey and Pot Roast, respectively.

Getting in early? These guys also have one of the best and fastest breakfast counters in town. Check it out, and enjoy.
