Quick Fix At Good Taste Chinese Buffet
By Luann, Diane & Jen / foodie@longislandernews.com
The Foodies this week ventured to the east end of Commack in search of a quick bite and found themselves at Good Taste Chinese Buffet in the Mayfair Shopping Center. Waiting for us was an abundance of choices at an affordable price and the chance to put our culinary creativity to use.
The setting is simple, but friendly, with a large open room and plenty of seating with tables for parties of all sizes.
The buffet area is easily accessible and visible from all tables. Boasting “over 88 items daily,” it features a variety of appetizers, soups, entrees and side dishes. There’s a salad bar with all the usuals as well as shellfish on ice and a selection of sushi and sashimi pieces.
Three islands feature an array of Chinese dishes as well as some American standards. Chicken and broccoli is a stand out, with broccoli firmer and crunchier than you might find at other buffets. Coconut chicken was also tasty, with a hint of sweet flavor infused in all white meat. The General Tso’s chicken has a slight kick to it, and the pork and vegetables a zesty spice. Salt and pepper shrimp are lightly battered and cooked well, with the tails already peeled.
While the egg rolls, lo mein and fried rice are standard, the dumplings are noteworthy. Pan fried dumplings are cooked well and filled with zesty seasoned meat—not at all greasy—and the steamed dumplings with shrimp are soft and flavorful.
At the farthest island you’ll find snow crab legs and a meat carving station.
Dessert spans a wide range of choices from cookies and cakes to an assortment of jello and pudding flavors along with fruit and ice cream. Even some traditional desserts land in the mix.
Our drinks were refilled frequently and our dishes cleared from the table before we returned from another trip to the buffet. The buffet area is clean and the trays never run too low on food and are always hot.
Lunch is priced at $6.95 for adults Monday through Thursday and $7.45 Friday through Sunday; children eat for $2.95-5.25, depending on their height. Dinner is $12.95 for adults Monday through Thursday and $13.95 Friday through Sunday; children are priced between $3.95 and $7.95. Those on the run have the option of carry out buffet; lunch is $3.99/lb and dinner $4.99/lb.
Overall, basic dishes are tasty, the dumplings notable and the service attentive. As far as buffets go, Good Taste does it in just that way—good taste.
