Oh-So-Sweet, Mama!
By Leah & Veronica/ foodie@longislandernews.com

Sweet Mama’s recently expanded its hours with an inviting and appetizing dinner menu that’s easy on the wallet and has something for the entire family. That’s the whole point of this family-friendly restaurant in Northport, known for their delicious pancakes and creamy milkshakes.

“Mom and dad feel really comfortable bringing their kids,” said the manager, George Alexander.

Comfortable, indeed. The soft yellows and homey knick-knacks make you feel like you’re eating at a country home where they churn the butter in the barn.
Since we came at lunchtime, when the place was packed by the way, we tested some of the traditional breakfast and lunch menu items that are available at all hours.
The Cheese Omelette ($7.95) was light, fluffy and filling, with toast and potatoes on the side.

Alexander said his favorite breakfast is the Big Daddy ($9.95) because it comes with a little bit of everything in one. Two eggs, two pancakes, two thin French toast slices, home fries, bacon and sausage for less than $10 is definitely a bargain.
Next we had Croissant French Toast ($7.95) created by Chef Marco Roe for the day’s specials. It was a delicious, sweet and succulent French toast-style croissant filled with cream cheese, juicy mango, shredded coconut, a touch of whip cream, and topped with raspberry drizzle.

Available later in the day are lunch items like the Mama’s Favorite ($7.95) oven gold Boars Head turkey, fresh sautéed spinach, muenster cheese and ranch dressing on marble rye toast with a side of tasty homemade potato salad. The portions here are big but not overwhelming.

Sweet Mama’s is a fast-paced, sit and be served kind of restaurant, with counter service reminiscent of a diner but with a more personal, less commercial feel.
“We are going to take care of our customers,” said Alexander.

The people who own Piccolo in Huntington and Mill Pond House in Centerport opened Sweet Mama’s in 2005 and have built a loyal following.

Although it’s crowded on the weekends and otherwise fairly busy, customers can expect comfort food and good service at an affordable price, now for breakfast, lunch and dinner all week long.
