Grilling Their Way To Success
By The Foodies./ foodie@longislandernews.com

Tucked away in a shopping center on East Jericho Turnpike is the Greek Grill of Huntington, a bright, sunny spot that was making brisk business with the afternoon lunch crowd Monday. And for good reason – as the staff greeted the regulars warmly, almost like family members, their presentation of traditional Greek staples shined brightly.

Our friends at the Long Island Press honored the Greek Grill in their Best of 2011 section, and after a recent visit, we certainly understand why.

We started with a combination plate ($11.25), which includes fried meatballs called keftedes ($7.15 for a full order); stuffed grape leaves and hummus ($5.95 for a full order). Crunchy on the outside and warm and moist on the inside, the keftedes are bite-sized and perfect for the chilly wintertime weather that is approaching. And be sure to scoop some of the hummus onto the fresh, warm pita bread. We emphasize scoop – the Greek Grill’s hummus is thick, rich and filling.

The Greek Grill’s sandwich selection is impressive. We stuck to classics like their gyro ($7.35), which boasts thinly sliced, flavorful beef and lamb packed perfectly into a pita. The Tzatziki sauce strikes the right balance in its consistency, too. Want your gyro on a platter? Order the gyro plate ($15.35) and it’s served with soup, pita bread, salad and fries or rice.

We also enjoyed the veal souvlaki sandwich ($7.95; $17.95 for a platter). It’s the same concept as a gyro, but with chunks of tender, seasoned veal, which is expertly prepared. And hats off to the chef – those of you who cook veal now and again know how delicate preparing it can be.

Greek salads ($5.95 for a small to $16.95 for family size) are fresh, colorful and loaded with radishes, peppers, red onions, feta cheese and stuffed grape leaves. And the falalel ($6.55 for a sandwich; $14.25 for a platter) is a savory, satisfying vegetarian choice.
And that’s just the beginning of the menu at the Greek Grill – there are plenty of pork, seafood, burger, steak and chops dishes to choose from, none of them exceeding $21 before tax. An enticing lunch special menu offers value-priced, tasty salad and sandwich combinations. Whatever you choose, we’re confident you’ll be pleased with your decision.
