‘Sweet’ Deal At Tropical Smoothie Café
By The Foodies./ foodie@longislandernews.com

With the weather warming up and the sun shining bright, the Foodies have had insatiable cravings for a few things, and smoothies are one of them. Luckily for us, owner Billy Nestor brought the franchise of Tropical Smoothie Café to a location just down the block from our office not too long ago, and we have been soaking in the wholesome, blended goodness of their fruity concoctions almost daily.

The interior of the Huntington location, located on Wall Street next to Black & Blue, is a burst of color and tropical fun. There are more than 30 smoothie combinations on the menu to choose from and all range in price from $4.49 to $4.99. Some are low-fat, while others are “supercharged” with supplements like soy protein, energizers or Vitamin C Immune Complex. There are even coffee and dessert smoothies.

Here are some of our favorites. The Hawaiian Breeze (pineapple, orange and non-fat yogurt) tastes just like a Hawaiian vacation; images of the beach and palm trees fill the mind as you sip this fresh and fruity beverage. The Kiwi Quencher (kiwi, strawberries and non-fat yogurt) is wonderfully refreshing. The Health Nut (blueberries, mango, banana, almonds and whey or soy protein) is for exactly the kind of person it is named after, and tastes good too. For the berry lovers out there, the Acai Berry Boost (acai, pomegranate, banana, blueberries and strawberries) is tasty, smooth and loaded with anti-oxidants.

We have also come to enjoy Tropical Smoothie Café for its food. Frequently stumped on where to get breakfast in this town, we are quite pleased with the café’s offerings. Egg wraps, flatbreads and ciabatta sandwiches paired with a smoothie are a great way to start the day. We are fans of the Salsa Sunrise Wrap (eggs, ham, bacon, Pepper Jack cheese and salsa on a white tortilla, $4.29), which adds a real kick to your morning, and the Classic Ciabatta (eggs, American, cheddar, and bacon, ham or sausage on toasted ciabatta, $3.99) is also a winner.

Lunch options are abundant, light and fresh. The Buffalo Chicken toasted wrap ($6.99) with chicken, low-fat mozzarella, romaine, buffalo sauce and light ranch, has a bit of kick to it without being over-the-top spicy. Having a smoothie alongside it takes the heat off of the buffalo sauce. The Turkey Bacon Ranch bistro sandwich ($6.99) is a nice treat, stuffed with turkey, bacon, Swiss, tomatoes, field greens and light ranch on ciabatta that’s toasted but still fluffy. For a walk on the lighter side, the grilled flatbreads are the way to go ($4.29). Our pick is the Peanut Butter Banana Crunch, served warm with gooey peanut butter, banana, granola and honey. There are also soups and salads.

They’re open 7 a.m.-9 p.m. on weekdays and late, until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Check out their specials to benefit Camp Sunshine, and take advantage of National Flip-Flop day on June 17 – be one of the first 500 to show up in flip-flops and get a free 24 oz. Jetty Punch smoothie. And remember, if you’re a Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce member, it’s buy one item get one free.
