Sushi On The Run
By Danny Schrafel/ foodie@longislandernews.com

At Maki Sushi (212-C Wall St., Huntington 631-470-4718) on the way to Halesite, the answer is unique, but certainly tasty. There, a Huntington Roll ($7.50) is an oversized sushi roll stuffed with cucumber, avocado and fried salmon and covered in a sweet sauce and sesame seeds before being sliced into six pieces. The lightly fried fish gives a warm sensation to the hefty rolls, while the nutty flavor and sauce create a balanced, guilty pleasure – as guilty as sushi gets, anyway. It’s also a good stepping-stone for sushi newcomers who still balk a little at the idea of raw fish.

Maki bills itself as take-out sushi, and the goal seems to be to offer quick, tasty sushi without resorting to the supermarket. And they’re successful in doing just that.

Inside the small storefront near Southdown Road, wood dominates the simple décor. If you want to stick around and eat on your lunch break, you’re welcome to – there are a few seats and ample reading material is available – but the shop is designed for take-away service in mind.

The lunch specials offer a selection of teriyaki entrees ($9.95 for chicken, $11.95 for beef, $10.95 for salmon) and are served with a California roll, salad, soup and appetizers. Lightly fried dumplings have a light exterior crunch and soft, savory filling; fried shrimp gyoza ($4.50) is bite-sized, fresh and enticing. These fried previews bode well for the tempura dishes ($12.95 – $15.95 for veggie, chicken, shrimp or squid) and katsu ($13.95 for chicken, $14.95 for fish).

Beef bulgoki ($11.95 for a lunch box) comes with onions, more sesame seeds, string beans and is prepared in what the menu describes as “special sauce.” That special sauce has a strong, salty sesame flavor that lingers on the palate and melds nicely with the veggies and onions. The beef is tender and bite-sized, so do it right and dig in with the chopsticks. Their ginger dressing is strong and crisper than most we’ve had – it grabs your attention and your taste buds, too.

Hours are ample and convenient; if you’re in a rush, call ahead for a pickup. Plan accordingly – our walk-up order was ready in about 10 minutes.
