Yummy Sushi: It's True
By Luann & Company/foodie@longislandernews.com

Sushi purists advise against dousing one’s lunch in that ever-present soy sauce-wasabi concoction. It’s a trap many of us fall into, slopping the stuff all over our sushi and sashimi, masking what the chef was going for. In sushi, the fish is the star, fresh and full-bodied.

I got through my lunch sushi special ($14.95) for the first time in a while with no soy sauce, no wasabi and just a bit of ginger to cleanse the palate between rolls. It’s a major credit to the folks at Yummy Sushi, 95 W. Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station, whose name lives up to the hype.

In that spirit, I started off by popping a Boston roll, boasting shrimp, sliced avocado and lettuce, into my mouth. Boston, it turns out, has a satisfying crunch and a nutty note thanks to the sesame seeds shaken on the rice prior to the extra goodies being rolled up.

I continued with the Boston rolls, mowing down the fairly sizable six-piece helping in short order – with no soy sauce. I moved on to the Salmon rolls, simple and delicious, wrapped in rice and seaweed. Still, no soy. I finished up with the Yellowtail roll, which is plenty savory with a strong onion flavor, a shake of sesame seed and scallions.

Brown rice gives a slightly sweet note to the sushi and the added benefit of being better for you than starched white – add a buck per roll if you’re going that route.

Miso soup boasts tender seaweed and small bits of scallions amidst the tofu, giving it a savory, but not overwhelming, flavor.

If one plans to get take-away sushi, budget a few extra minutes and stick around as they make your meal. Not only does one get to see sushi craftsmanship in action, it’s a soothing respite from the bustle of New York Avenue and Jericho Turnpike, where the restaurant calls home. Neutral tones, tasteful tile, wood accents and colorful mosaics give a muted, peaceful aura to the restaurant.

The menu boasts a variety of soups, noodle dishes and additional lunch specials, including sashimi and sushi boxes. More than a dozen lunch box specials, ranging from $9.50 to about $11, boast chicken, noodles, tempura, katsu and teriyaki dishes. Based on the sushi, we’ve got plenty of reason to bet their diverse offerings are yummy indeed.
