Skip Into Spring With Smoothies
By The Foodies / foodie@longislandernews.com

Though the temperatures are still relatively low, spring is just around the corner, and us Foodies had a hankering for something summery. We decided to head to Tropical Smoothie Café in Huntington Station to sip their sweet smoothies in anticipation of warmer days to come.

Tropical Smoothie Café greeted us with a funky, warm, colorful décor that promised us exactly what we expected – a tropical-themed eatery. Brightly colored sofa chairs, plentiful plants and bamboo-lined walls spruced up the café, located at 326 Walt Whitman Rd., just south of the Walt Whitman Mall.

Selecting a smoothie was our first dilemma. Tropical Smoothie Café features a plethora of fruit and yogurt smoothies to choose from, and each sounded more delicious than the next.

Options include Low-Fat Smoothies, Splendid Smoothies – all under 200 calories – and Power Smoothies. On the Power Smoothies menu one can choose a Health Nut – blueberries, mangos, banana, almonds and soy or whey protein, a Peanut Paradise – peanut butter, banana, notfat yogurt and whey or soy protein, or a Fat Buster – strawberries, oranges, banana and fat metabolizer – among others. On the Splendid Smoothies menu, you can order tasty drinks such as a Citrus Split – orange and banana – or a Cranberry Crush – cranberry, strawberries and banana.

We couldn’t resist the Low-Fat Smoothie selections, however, and ordered a Mango Magic – mangos, pineapples and non-fat yogurt – and a Sunrise Sunset – strawberries, pineapples, mango and oranges. The Mango Magic is fruity and thick and one can instantly taste the creamy yogurt mixed in. The Sunrise Sunset is refreshing, stimulating and bursting with fruity flavor.

Tropical Smoothie Café also offers a wide variety of wraps, bistro sandwiches and salads, and a soup of the day. As part of the Paradise Combo, you can order a smoothie with either a toasted wrap, bistro sandwich or gourmet salad for $9.99. For our lunch, we chose the Jamaican Jerk Chicken toasted wrap and the Wasabi Roast Beef bistro sandwich.

The Jamaican Jerk Chicken wrap comes with chicken breast strips, Southwestern rice, corn, black beans, asparagus, onions, low-fat mozzarella cheese and Jamaican jerk sauce, all packaged neatly in a white tortilla. The delightfully juicy chunks of chicken drip with flavor, and the wrap definitely has a kick to it as the dressing is deliciously spicy.

Each wrap and sandwich comes with fresh fruit or chips. We ordered the fruit, and had the choice of an orange or banana. We went with the orange, and the bright, juicy slices were an excellent companion to the spicy wrap.

Filled to the brim with lean roast beef, the Wasabi Roast Beef sandwich is topped with pepper jack cheese and fresh romaine lettuce leaves and dressed in a wasabi Caesar dressing. The bistro sandwich comes on a toasted ciabatta roll and also has a bit of a kick to it. Though not quite as spicy as the Jamaican Jerk Chicken wrap, the Wasabi Roast Beef is bursting in flavor and sprinkled our taste buds with an invigorating “pow.”

As the weather continues to warm – or hopefully does so – we will definitely be back to Tropical Smoothie Café to sample their other fare and their extensive smoothie menu. We might even stop by in the morning on our way to the office one day – Tropical Smoothie Café serves breakfast wraps that sound enticing, including the Western Wrap – eggs, ham, red and green bell peppers, diced tomatoes and pepper jack cheese in a warm tortilla – and the Early Bird – chicken breast strips, eggs, pepper jack cheese, diced tomatoes and Texas petal sauce wrapped in a white tortilla.
