Slide Into Sweetness At Crumbs
By Tricia Arend / foodie@longislandernews.com

Huntington’s newest bakery has us crumbling with joy. Crumbs Bake Shop, which opened just three weeks ago, boasts a tasty array of baked goods that are sure to satisfy any sweet tooth.

Though there are 10 Crumbs in New York City, Crumbs in Huntington is the first to come to Long Island. Operated under one owner – and therefore not a franchise – Crumbs uses the freshest ingredients to whip up a vast variety of choices for their customers.

Located on Wall Street, Crumbs is inviting and warm. Upon entering customers will have a hard time selecting what they desire once they feast their eyes on the shelves upon shelves of attractive desserts.

All of Crumbs’ products are made in Long Island City and shipped every morning to each store location. Customers will find any kind of baked good – from cookies and muffins, bars and tarts, to cakes, scones, donuts, brownies, Danishes and pies – at Crumbs, but their true specialty are their cupcakes.

Over 50 varieties of cupcakes are sold at Crumbs and the flavors are always changing. Classic size cupcakes go for $2.75 and signature size cupcakes are $3.75.

Some cupcakes are true to their name and taste exactly as one would expect. The S’mores cupcake, for example, is a chocolate cupcake with cream cheese filling topped with marshmallows, chocolate chips and graham cracker crumbs, and the Carrot cupcake is carrot cake topped with a cream cheese filling.

Others are harder to pinpoint. If you want to order an Artie Lang, for example, expect a vanilla cupcake with a cream cheese center, vanilla cream cheese frosting on top and a layer of fondant. A Baba Booey is a chocolate cupcake filled with peanut butter cream cheese half-covered with peanut butter cream cheese and chocolate cream cheese frosting encircled by a thick ring of sweet little peanut butter chips.

The Pumpkin cupcake is a pumpkin sponge cake with no filling and pumpkin cream cheese frosting, walnuts and chocolate drizzle on top. The Caramel Chew is a tasty concoction of chocolate cake with caramel cream cheese frosting in the center and on top, and slices of Snickers as a garnish.
Chocolate Praline will have hazelnut fans drooling. This cupcake, comprised of chocolate cake with a chocolate fudge center, is smothered in praline cream cheese frosting and topped with crushed hazelnuts and chocolate drizzle. Extreme chocolate lovers will find heaven in the Blackout cupcake, which features chocolate cake filled with chocolate fudge with chocolate frosting and chocolate drizzle on top.

Customers looking for a minty burst can satisfy their taste buds with a Grasshopper, a chocolate cupcake with chocolate fudge inside and mint cream cheese frosting on top. Meanwhile, apple lovers will find a true delight in the Caramel Apple cupcake, a vanilla cupcake with filling similar to an apple pie that is topped with a cream cheese frosting and a caramel drizzle.

Specialty cupcakes can be ordered to taste for any occasion – including a 16-inch cupcake that comes with a wrapper and can feed up to 60 people ($120) – as can nearly anything else.

“Crumbs can custom everything for anyone,” said manager Billly Issah.
Crumbs also bakes special products depending on the time of the year; cookies in the shape of Cardinals and Steelers helmets could be seen in the bakery last week, Obama/McCain cupcakes were being sold around election time and soon enough customers will see Valentine’s Day-themed goods hit the shelves.

If you’re looking for a treat or to satisfy your sweet tooth, Crumbs is the place to try. After just one bite of their tasty goods, you’ll be smiling the whole day long.
