Cool Off Nice With A Savory Ice
Escape from the summer heat with a refreshing Ralph’s Famous Italian Ices and ice cream
By Tricia Arend / foodie@longislandernews.com

Summer is approaching and the temperature is beginning to rise so high that the neighborhood youth are trying their hand at cracking eggs on the sidewalk to see if they’ll cook. When those heat waves set in, there’s nothing better to refresh a dry, thirsty throat than ices and ice cream, and Ralph’s Famous Italian Ices is the place to go for both.

Ralph’s Famous Italian Ices, located at 362 New York Avenue in Huntington village, has a vast variety of ices, shakes, smoothies and sundaes for people of all ages to choose from. Colorful bins line the walls of the blue-and-white checkered ice shop, inviting patrons to sample some of the many flavors of ices.

Water ice selections range from the fruity Mango, Passion Fruit and Berry Burst flavors to the zesty Malibu Bay Breeze, Caribbean Splash and Sour Cherry flavors. Coke, Ice Tea, Root Beer and Strawberry Margarita are just a few of the many other alternatives available. The water ices are fat free, dairy free and cholesterol free.

The crème ices are just as tasty and refreshing and contain dairy. From Cookie Dough to Cappuccino and from Strawberry Cheesecake to Chocolate Hazelnut, Ralph’s has a crème ice flavor for everybody. Customers who dip their spoons into the Java Chip and Chocolate Fudge Brownie ices are sure to be satisfied. The Java Chip has a rich coffee flavor and is sprinkled throughout with large, sweet chocolate chips. The Chocolate Fudge Brownie is smooth, dark and creamy with tiny chunks of gooey, fudge brownie.
Some ices have no sugar added, including the Lemon, Cherry, Chocolate, Orange, Cappuccino, Java Chip, Orange & Crème and Mint Chip flavors.

The ices come in three sizes – small, medium and large – and cost $2.25, $2.75 and $3.25, respectively. Customers can get up to two flavors in each size. Pints are available for $4.75, and quarts can be purchased for $8. A party bucket will cost $21.

Ralph’s also sells cold and creamy ice cream. Traditional flavors such as Vanilla and Strawberry are offered, as well as less traditional flavors such as Cake Batter and Mississippi Mud. A small will cost you $3 and a large goes for $3.75. A pint can be purchased for $4.75 and a plain sundae is $4.25. Signature sundaes, such as Nutty Buddy and Apple Cobbler, are $4.75. No ice cream dish is complete without added extras, however, and Ralph’s has quite a few to choose from. For just 60 cents each you can add Toasted Coconut, Chocolate Espresso Beans, Nerds and Wet or Dry Walnuts, as well as regulars such as Sprinkles, Reese’s Pieces and Whipped Cream.

Even if you’re not in the mood to dip your spoon into a luxuriously invigorating ice or ice cream, you can sip on a creamy milk shake ($4.25) or artic shake ($4.25). Though there are well over 10 varieties to choose from, the Cake Shake is a customer favorite and one of the store’s most popular. Topped with fluffy whipped cream and colorful sprinkles, the Cake Shake is thick and frosty with a layer of sprinkles at the bottom and sprinkles scattered throughout.

If you’re looking to cool down this summer, stop by Ralph’s and order a refreshingly cool treat or drink. It’ll be the perfect escape from the summer heat.
