Pumpernickel’s:
A Tradition For Decades
Dinner at Pumpernickel’s
Restaurant is a tradition for generations of residents from
Northport and surrounding areas. Standing at the crossroads
of Main Street and Route 25A, Artie Glad’s German-American
restaurant is a landmark in more ways than one.
In the simplest sense, the restaurant’s location is
at the entrance to Northport’s Main Street. It’s
both on the way, and on the way home. But it’s in another
sense that Pumpernickel’s truly enjoys landmark status.
As a tradition among generations of residents, it’s
a place where families gather to celebrate occasions like
birthdays and anniversaries; or to mark life’s important
events like graduations and new jobs. It’s the kind
of place a guy might take his girl to pop the question. In
short, it’s a warm and comfortable home away from home.

Whether you walk into Centerport’s
Viva Juan on a Wednesday night (as we did) or on a Saturday
night when karaoke is in full effect, you are walking straight
into a party.

Authentic
Turkish At House Of Kebab
Ask any grade school student
to locate Turkey and he’ll tell you it’s in Eastern
Europe, right near Greece. But there must be a little bit
that’s missing because it’s right here at the
Turkish Kebab House on Deer Park Avenue. The little bit of
Turkey that Mehmet Ozdemie and his wife Selda have created
at 1815 Deer Park Avenue (just south of the Dix Hills border)
provides a “home away from home” for Turkish nationals
from throughout the area.

Hearty
Italian Fare For All
Dining out is a way of life
in Huntington; families use the dinner hour to reconnect after
work and school; friends share a bite and a night out; and
couples indulge in the luxury of a well-cooked meal with none
of the work. Pomodorino on West Jericho Turnpike is the meeting
place for them all.

Comfort On
To some, it would seem that
the closer you get to the North Shore, the further you get
from home style Southern cooking – that’s just
not the North Shore’s thing.

A
Hideaway In The Midst Of Everything
With a cozy room, intimate
seating at candlelit tables, and a meal worth traveling for,
Restaurant Mazzi has all the makings of a favorite getaway.
Except for one thing… Mazzi is hardly off the beaten
path. In fact, this top-notch restaurant is in the middle
of everything. Located in a former house on Jericho Turnpike
in Huntington, Mazzi does a great job of making diners forget
that Jericho Turnpike is just outside the windows.

Marks The Spot On The Foodie Map
You can’t judge a book

Old
Fashioned Fun At Canterbury Ales
Billy Hoest knows what people
like. Hoest, publican — and owner — of Huntington
village eatery Canterbury Ales, knows that good food, good
drinks, and a smile will keep diners happy. He also knows
that when you throw in a few good deals and an endearingly
quirky atmosphere, you have what most restaurateurs can only
dream about; you have more than a restaurant, you have a landmark.

Excitement At The Sea Shanty
The allure of the sea has
long been the topic of stories, poems, and fantasies—old
and new—and we, the Foodies in training, believe that
we can now tell you why. It has dawned on us that the water
carries with it an excitement that is unparalleled. It inspires
the child, the explorer, and the adventurer within us and
one often feels lucky to stumble upon a place that complements
those powerful qualities without eclipsing them.

The
Mansion: A Feast For All The Senses
When we set out for “The
Mansion at the Woodlands,” we were a bit concerned that
we might encounter a stuffy place, perhaps better geared to
the foodie fogey than today’s fun-loving foodies. Worry
not; although the building and décor said stately,
the warmth and hospitality said “casual, enjoyable,
upscale quality.”

House Barbeque: It’s About Comfort
In the Carolinas, barbeque
joints are like Starbucks – there’s one on every
corner. Unlike the coffee giant, however, each Southern barbecue
maker has its own personality and while the offerings –
pulled pork, ribs and slow roasted chicken – are pretty
standard, the barbeque sauce is what sets each apart, and
each maker has his own closely guarded recipe.

Blue Room: Melodies of Fine Food
Be it a blue moon, blue jeans,
Picasso’s blue period, the blue sky or just a blue mood,
there is emotion and strength in the color. There is feeling

When
Chinese Calls, Call Albert
Chinese restaurants may get
the cold shoulder from some during the hot summer months.
But not from we Foodies. We sometimes get a hankering for
the robust and often hot flavors found most prominently in
this Asian cuisine no matter how high the thermometer goes,
and a recent trip to Albert’s Mandarin Gourmet in Huntington
Village was just the ticket.

Jonathans:
All The Ingredients For A Perfect Meal
When we first started our
Foodie adventure about two months ago, we knew we were going
to enjoy it. Sure it increased our time commitment required
to put out the best paper we could for the community, but
eating at great restaurants and writing about it – how
bad can that be for two guys who love fine food? And so far,
we’ve had the pick of some great dining places in the
food capital of Long Island.

Setting The Mood In Huntington
Indigo, the color first named
by Sir Isaac Newton in 1672 when he passed a beam of sunlight
through a prism, breaking white into seven different colors,
has been glowing brightly in Huntington for the past two years.

RED:
“Striking Yet Simplistic”
The name Red is about as
simple a name for a restaurant as you can get, and in retrospect,
that word juxtaposed against its busy New York Avenue façade
foreshadows the graceful union of traditional and contemporary
elements housed within.

Trattoria
Grasso: Fine Dining and Jazz
Bravo!
Bravo: a most fitting description of the
creative efforts, work and life of restaurateur Gail Grasso
proprietor and guiding light of Trattoria Grasso, one of Long
Island’s truly unique dining venues. Gail, in her previous
work-life – way back in the mid 70’s – was
one of the early staffers of a start-up company called Cablevision.
Among other amazing achievements, Gail guided the compilation
of the American Movie Classics film library, and she named
“Bravo,” the Cablevision-owned, highly regarded
Film and Arts Network.

Fill
Your Tank At Jackson’s
The bright red sign in front
of Jackson’s seemed to shine especially bright, inviting
us inside — maybe it was because we were especially
hungry. We found parking spots immediately, however we’ve
heard it can be difficult to find a spot or table during weekends
and prime dinner hours. Jackson’s – the new incarnation
of Blue Oyster Grille by restaurateur Artie Bloom —
doesn’t take reservations, except for special days,
but call when you are leaving the house and they will add
you to their waiting list. They are taking Mother’s
Day reservations, and both you and your mom will love it.
